They’re actually ashamed, but you know, what’s the worst for Asians is losing face, so they don’t really want to talk about it and are very active pacifists now.

Then there are the circumstances. It all started when the army seizd the government by executing the pacifist prime minister. The military dictatorship put the whole country under heavy propaganda (using the exact same methods as the nazis), so the people were thinking they were threatened and the countries around wanted to kill them. The constant bombardment of civilians by the Americans throughout the whole war did nothing to change their minds.

As for the soldiers, they were brainwashed and, if you know a bit about this kind of propaganda, the basics are to dehumanize the adversary, leading to the atrocities in China, Korea and many Southeastern Asia countries that fell before them, the human experiment labs and other horrors.

There’s indeed still some old people from that time still alive and still having these racist thoughts, but they’re of course disappearing over time. More importantly, the immense majority of the Japanese population who didn’t live those events are completely opposed to such things.

Just think about the power of disinformation, and what happens when it’s massively used agaisnt a whole country.
