The boy just wants to help his mom. The problem is that he starts to understand she doesn’t need anything from him. She only needs him to be happy, and that would be gratifying in itself.
On the otherside, you want to repay your parent who is not even your blood relative (with whom you built that relationship in your adolescent years, so you know about repaying kindness). Now you are stuck with nothing to do, nothing to repay, nothing to make her happy (Yes, it would make her happy to see him live his life, but he can’t do something for her and make her happy).

If the author changes things and makes it a forbidden lust storyline, I will be disappointed, but in the way I look at things, this story feels taken from real-life people with trauma and hardships.
