that’s actually a pretty weak proposal (also, drinking game for how many times I say student council lol)

I’d have said that what the student council is… is already in the name – student council. it’s not the teacher-guided student council, the teacher-supported student council, it’s the student council, a council by students for students.

that’s is, not to diminish the role of teachers – without teachers, there is no school and students will not learn as effectively nor efficiently without their guidance. but the student council is a uniquely student-only organization.

I agree that it’s important to pick the right candidates given the impact the student council has not only on the current and future students of the school but also outside of school; after school and when you’re on the way to the real world.

But who picks student candidates? who elects them into the council? is it not anyone else but us, the students? if there is a candidate that we think should not be in the council, don’t we just… not vote for them?

students who wish to be on the council campaign for positions and we have an election to pick if we think they’re worthy to represent us, the student body. why would we need teacher assistance for this? can we not think for ourselves? can we not judge and decide for ourselves?

in short, I don’t think we need outside help when choosing our own representatives. our teachers have already taught us well and it is up to us to exercise what we’ve learned to pick effective candidates to represent us.
