If they’re worried about having been identified as deserters they can just ditch the uniforms, unlike the MCs group their uniforms provide no protection.

I didn’t finish the chapter yet but the “logic” of the first page is insane. Unless they’ve only met that group of deserters, which they’ve clearly met more people, by virtue of how out numbered soldiers are by civilians they’d have run into way more bad civilians.
They don’t have to join up with the MCs group but the reasoning behind why should make sense. It’s the details that separate good manga from the generic trash.

Why are most of these characters stupid or too worried… Whats a better chance? Siding with the group that CLEARLY saved you and is strong. Or some randoms that you’ve only heard of.
