Fun fact(s):

Wand was (has taken on a different meaning) just a different for staff.

Now it was taken on a lighter version of a staff, often reduced down to a twig, while it originally meant something just a little smaller (and thinner) than a quarter staff. Anything you could wield in one hand. In a pinch.

Staff definition:

[…]
A stick or cane carried as an aid in walking or climbing.
A stout stick used as a weapon; a cudgel.
A pole on which a flag is displayed; a flagstaff.
A rod or baton carried as a symbol of authority.
A rule or similar graduated stick used for testing or measuring, as in surveying.

In case of people (con artists) who posed as magicans IRL, a big (more or less) ornate pole to beat things (and people) with in a pinch. Because magic doesn’t work (because it doesn’t exist unlike the con artists using it).

There is even an example of such a con artist walking around today: Kat[hryn] Kerr.
Unfortunately her cons run under the guise of religion and hence are deemed legal. They shouldn’t, but they are.
