In medieval times, public bathhouses were a thing. It was a place to meet, eat, drink, talk, and fūck. (And not all customers got fresh water). But the later activity was frowned upon by the dominant Catholic church (which took over from the Orthodox church, and those were two that were around at that time, everything else was a later invention).
