I am thinking it is the other way around here. It is the boy version that is an Ayakashi. While it is true that Ayakashi can be born from inanimate objects, this is not always the case. What IS always the case is that Ayakashi are born from people’s dreams/fantasies.
In the case here, Matsuri thinks of herself as a boy and dreams of this. This is her desire. In other words, it is her vision and desire of being a boy that gave birth to an Ayakashi.
Also there are other tings to be considered. Her being a girl is a curse. The corruption makes Ayakashi stronger and corrupt them. It realize and the base desire of the Ayakashi. But the base of the curse here is that Matsuri is a girl. If it became stronger, why would it stop being a curse and release the person it cursed? Rather, if it became corupted then it’s purpose should have become stronger instead. In other words, it should have turned Matsuri more feminine while keeping her cursed. Or maybe it would have started turning other people into girls/boys.
Now as for plotline itself. It is clear that they never aimed for Suzu. The enemies always aimed for Matsuri.
As a boy, he would try starting to date her right? This was his desire. To become a boy and date her. So in the end, his corruption would lead him forego all other things in favor of being with Suzu and being a boy.
He even mentioned that he’d have to do something about the female version of himself. But this is actually pretty dark. Even if the female one was an Ayakashi… could you ever imagine him sharing Suzu? No, he wants to get rid of her.
