I find it a little hard to believe that none of the parasites realize that they need the butterflies alive. Due to reasons, only butterflies can kill the bugs, bugs will kill all the humans if left unchecked, and parasites need to eat humans to live. Therefore, they actually need the butterflies alive, as killing them will mean that they won’t have any more food.
I mean, I get that they lost friends of theirs, but even vampires understand that vampires need a low population to remain sustainable
