I think It’s poetic that the same poison that deteriorated his masters has now been inflicted on to him. So it’s a race whether he can overcome what they couldn’t or be consumed by it

I really don’t like the direction the story is going with him being poisoned. I’d be more content if there was an antidote to strive for, but as it stands, it’s a death march to a bad ending.

I think that the old master daughter is going to find a cure to the poison because she is the “priestess” and in story like this priest/priestess is the one who can heal.
