Dangerous fumes – countered by breathing masks (also helps with monsters that exude poison through air)
Corpses – can hide behind, though monsters can do the same. Also, food for monsters, maybe they will be less aggressive if they were not hungry, heck, some may even avoid combat entirely.
I thought they were collecting loot and precious things from monsters, otherwise they really are quite useless. But I think author just tryed to make it a bit more dramatic and show how much they actually do to show how much of an ass MC was.

I always over-think this kind of stuff. Yes, I know I’m reading a series about dungeon cleaners. But… the reasoning they give is strained at best.
Bodies piling up limiting combat movements works both ways, and hunters typically have ranged weapons (bows, guns, magic) while monsters tend to use crude weapons or tooth & claw. In fact, if you think of the dramatized Spartan defense, a small group of hunters could utilize bodies as improvised chokepoints.
As for poisonous fumes: they make it sound like a single corpse left behind could hold off an entire hunter team. In that case, the defending team should make barricades and weapons out of these corpses.
I’d agree with using enemy bodies to find out where you’ve been, but still… sending in a team to wipe down cavern walls with cleaning solution?!
Of course he doesn’t know anything…how else could he say the things he was saying and suggesting without guilt.

Author gave him dementia or just wants us to support the technical antagonist of the story instead of the protagonist?

It should be okay for him to be a little ignorant since it wasn’t part of his job, but you’d expect him to know at least the basic stuff about what all the “workers” do as someone who had been working in the field for 20+ years
