Indeed his character even makes me dislike him as a reader, behaves like a weakling, act as if he has no honor, he should take advantage of his power to change his reputation but instead acts like a loser only to show what he’s really capable of at the last second only to piss off the others even more as they believe he’s useless and shameless and face cognitive dissonance, it’s either poorly written or the author makes the mc like this on purpose, that said now that they’ve seen that despite his low cultivation he can hold his ground, the doubts are weird, sure he’s a dick but he’s not as weak as he let people think…
