If he wasn’t so much stronger than him, Keith would’ve been justified cutting the Count down from the moment he swung his sword at him. I’m guessing that’s why he was only discharged and not thrown in jail for attacking a noble.
In the real world attacking a senior officer during a war would bring that person to a prison at best.

So… Being knighted is literally elevating from non-noble to noble or, if already a noble, giving you a new title assuming you can’t or haven’t yet inherited one… Trying to kill a noble without the King/Emperor’s consent is 10 times worse than being punched by a noble of a lower rank, especially in self-defense. This is a lose your title at best level of offense…
Also, a knight is not a military unit. They are often warrior to earn merits and higher standings, Plus they obey the nobles above them, but they can fight in any position, if they’re even deployed. A horseman, a cavalier, a dragoon, a horse archer, etc. Those are actual units with established fighting styles and position.
