Nah, it makes perfect sense actually. One of the core tenets of medical ethics is “do no harm”. Treating a patient that you know is beyond your abilities is considered harmful. A junior resident trying to do this surgery alone could get his medical license revoked. Could YOU truly take the responsibility for someone’s death when you knowingly treat them with insufficient knowledge and it goes wrong?
In this particular situation it’s fine because the more experienced healer was going to abandon the patient to die anyway, but for a doctor to say there is nothing they can do is normal and sometimes correct. Cutting someone open when you have no idea if it will actually help us what psychopaths do. He also got incredibly lucky, the symptoms pointed more to a problem with the oesophagus, which he wouldn’t have been able to help by randomly cutting into the abdomen.

It’s okay, it isn’t expected for you to understand the thinking of someone suffering from severe trauma. Especially since the trauma has been going on for his entire life, including his formative years.
