Kinda dumb reasoning for the duel, honestly. “Maybe if I win, and if the king understands that I am better despite Wals’ streak of successes, and if he ignores his daughter’s wishes, and if the king has guts to make a decisive choice, and if Seletia goes with it – then I’ll get one step closer to the goal of World Domination. Maybe. Somehow.” Anyone with 2 braincells will tell you that a coup is a much easier path to success. If killing Wals was the first step of that plan, cool, but why take the risk in a public fight? Just kill him in his sleep, with poison, etc. Then usurp his place thanks to your status, gain trust of crown princess, kill the King and become the Regent.
Or, like, a dozen other ways that don’t put you at risk of losing face, if MC pulls off some protagonist-level bullshit.

Never mind achievement or whether or not Ruven wins. Seletia doesn’t acknowledge him as Guardian material in the first place. Unless she’s pressured into it somehow, I doubt she’ll accept him, especially if she heard that little proclamation of his.
