I imagine that clearing a dungeon and destroying the core means no more dungeon or monsters. That would be a massive financial blow to everyone. There are good reasons why certain actors would want them to fail, especially if they were unaware of the disaster the would occur otherwise.

The mayor definitely wants the party to fail and wants Rou to sabotage them because the dungeon being conquered would result in the town losing their main source of income.

we need more of this. I know their journey is not that easy
