I think I’m getting the dynamic here. 
Curtis and Kayden are actually a thing. While it’s not mentioned clearly I think those two are more than just friends and if you take this into consideration that means his student is like Curtis stepson or something like that. It makes sense then to help him for Kayden to be happy. 
Or maybe I just watched too much Netflix…
