Plotline lost
They are inside a video game.
It’s not parallel dimension or world encroachment, they are not trapped in the game, it’s not a joint hallucination, the npc’s are not sapient or holding souls of some kind.
It’s just a video game & people are acting as if it is the real world with life or death stakes.
When a plot becomes irrational, it must be given 1 chance to be righted and remain within the realm of a story rather than an incoherent fever dream.
They were given their chance.

Imagine being a slave mining every day in a VR game. Then again people play runescape and do it without being pressured to repay debts or anything. Maybe slavery can be a desirable thing.
