If she truly believed that all life was equally precious, why didn’t she just marry that jackass? Surely that was easily a bargain price – her life and happiness for the lives of all her subjects. So she’s just dishonest with herself.

I wouldn’t agree with the idealistic “all life is equal”. As sad as it sounds, not all life is equal (be it for the better or worse). You can shrink the gap, but there’ll always be difference by individuality.
For example, the princess herself, she has the capability to lead and protect the refugees. If she’s gone, then what awaits the refugees is death. So it is indeed foolish to not have a bare minimum of preserving her own life for the well-being of the refugees in this situation.
The princess is pretty shit at politics… She’s trying to save everyone while saving no one, and literally has nothing to offer except for her prayer, a literal damsel in distress whose only purpose is to move the main character closer to wiping out the opposing force.

So… basically he wanted to create the utopia, but something gone wrong (his woman died) and he focused solely on the revenge, forgetting all about everything and anything other then that 
that princess is a fool
