That swordsmanship really sux. The only time you swing so wide with a sword is when you want to get stabbed in the throat. If your sword isn’t in front of you – you have nothing between you and the enemy’s weapon. While a longsword may be considered a cut and thrust weapon, you still want to be stabbing. More optimised for that, gives you better range and is way more useful against an armed opponent. And is infinitely more lethal – you’d have a very hard time surviving a stab wound without antibiotics.
Now, sure, you do swing with a saber. But it is very interesting how sabers had historically been used in India and the Arab worlds – you keep the blade very close to yourself.
