The modern(post ~1900) yakuza are strongly linked to Japanese nationalism and Japanese fascism(actual fascism, not just right wing politics in general.)
These groups saw, and likely continue to see, Korea as a (lost) possession. Japan controlled Korea starting around 1895 and fully colonized it roughly 1910-1945. Many of the people who came to power in postwar Korea were collaborators during this colonial period.
