Ouch. If you are male and think a female is flirting because she is smiling, you might be in for a disappointment.
Most females in most societies are thought
to smile in any encounter. They might even be penalized by not doing so. Coments like “Why are you not smiling?” “If you smile you are prettier!” “Why are you so angry?” are common. (But those comments are not polite, not friendly and not welcome. They are rude, overstepping and frankly coming from people who do not know either manners nor respect for other people.)
So smiling at you is usually learned behaviour, it is done out of wanting to behave according to the social norms, to be polite and friendly and are most often not an invitation. You have to be careful not to overstep her boundaries.
If most females around you are not smiling in social encounters it is either because you live in a culture where social smiling is not common or in a culture where smiling to a man is taken as an invitation to flirt, and females needs to show hostility not to have their personal space invaded. Usually by men thinking that eye contact or a smile is an invitation from the woman.
But still, flirting is fun. Friendliness is great for all. It’s not easy to know social cues. As long as we treat all people around us with respect it usually works out fine! And here is a smile from me just because this is a beautiful day and I am sure you are a beautiful soul worthy of happiness and joy! 🙂
