This is the first time we’ve seen him take the potential of failure into account and instead use his natural ability to use the environment around him to his advantage (which is a skill he’s shown since chapter 1), however he still doesnt plan that far into the future since he had no plan to take out the hobgoblin.
This is also the first time he puts himself on the same level as goblins by implying that his lack of ego is the only reason he isnt just as bad as them
