Average shonen fans also seeing Kumi as “evil bitch who hates fun” is also very telling of their reading level. I wonder why a medical professional might dislike boxing, the sport that almost always gives you irreversible brain damage. Ippo takes place in the 80’s and 90’s, so it’s loyal to the known science at the time, but nowadays we know Kumi is right; you don’t make it out of boxing okay. She wants to have a future with Ippo, but most boxers don’t get to have normal futures. Even if it doesn’t manifest immediately almost all professional boxers develop varying degrees of punch drunkness once they retire. Obviously I still disagree with Kumi, but it isn’t because her fears are stupid, it’s because that’s Ippo’s choice to make. It’s just your average shonen fan forgetting that Hajime no Ippo is based on reality, where if you get hit too much, too hard, you aren’t okay after a senzu bean or eating a bunch of meat.

If only Wall E died, so Ippo can come out of retirement and seek revenge on Martinez.
