I wrote a comment during I misinterpreted the story a bit.

Instead of noble houses I should have written “branch family” and instead of royal family “main family”. Monarch is still kinda correct but patriarch/matriarch would be the most correct word to substitute “family head”.

The faction stuff still is correct.

The nobles and royals stuff is applicable in some mangas (and even happened in reality), just not now with what happens in the story.

I apologise, I should have re-read a bit before posting an explanation.

Explanation for Prince:

The monarch (king/queen) is appointed by the nobles and every heir of a noble family can beyond a certain amount of influence becomes prince. Once the current monarch dies, all the noble houses have a meeting and vote for a new monarch, every house can only vote once and among all the princes can be chosen.

The grand prince: It means crown prince, i. e. the prince with the best chances and the support of the current royal family.

How factions are made: since every major house tends to have a prince, for the sake of power, they would naturally vote for their own family to be king. However, since everyone would do that, nobody would have meaningful support. A powerful house thus promises every house that votes for their prince money, good deals, … (Thus, they have a faction.) For the other major houses not to become powerless, they either form their own faction or join one.)

Benefits of making a faction: your prince (your child, at least most of the time) becomes king -> you get a lot of support

Benefits of joining a faction: the chances of having supported the new monarch are higher -> the king/queen views you favourably

Disadvantages of making a faction: other factions become hostile towards you (i.e. you have more enemies) and if you aren’t important enough your chances of winning the monarch vote are less than slime (nonexistent)

Disadvantages of joining a faction: you have less influence than if your prince (your child) becomes king/queen

This is my understanding of the situation. If someone wants, I don’t mind someone shorting my explanation and adding their own 2 cents.
