Love the backstory. It made it more interesting
That was war…. it seems like some if not all of the commenters have no memory of actual real war occurrences and think “this is so unreal, this would never happen” :
1.- Germany bombs on Britain/England.
2.- Nazi Concentration camps.
3.- Hiroshima and Nagasaki
4- 9/11 attack.
5.- Drone strike near Kabul’s airport
6.- Israeli air strike on a UN-run school in the Gaza Strip.
Etc, etc, etc.
There are a shit load of War crimes and incidents where non-soldiers and civilians were affected, Jupiter’s incident is just one of the many examples of what happens during war and it is Sad, and an accurate representation of it.
But remember folks:

The people below me need to chill this is to much writing for a comment on a single chapter
1) she would be dead. Assassinated without ever sharing her voice.
2) there would be no court because “there would be no crime” so to speak.
3) this entire chapter sold the idea that government actually functions properly and if corruption is exposed, its rooted out and justice prevails!!!
4) not how it works. But it is how the story would be told.
Lets just hypothesize for a moment if it were to became a big story, one that the Empire couldnt hide (which it WOULDNT)
What would ACTUALLY HAPPEN is
1) the NeverDark Empire would flip, invert the story on its head and create a false narrative and brand it the truth.
Any dissent towards this narrative would be rooted out till all thats left is people who believe THEIR STORY.
2) Granny would be blamed for massacring an innocent village.
3) they would hold a “closed trial” where she may or may not even physically be there. (Its just theater for the masses)
4) she would be branded the mastermind of the massacre and executed….
Thus, creating a heroic narrative where the Empire smited the evil villian who attempted to use its own power and authority against innocents.
5) The truth is, the village and children would be massacred by the Empire without anyone knowing it was actually granny who tried to save them.
In the end, they would have completed several goals with one staged event.
The empire would have…
- completed their initial goal of destroying the village.
- Rooted out dissent within their military. Which in turn ‘futureproof’s further rebellions and gives the Empire the moral justificstion to destroy further “corruption and dissent” from the Public’s view.
- solidified trust in the Empire’s justice system from the eyes of the public.
THATS HOW REALITY WORKS.
You better believe they would take full advantage of a tragedy like this.
And I havent even scratched the surface of how they would utilize the aftermath of such an event.
But you better believe it WOULD be utilized to further the means of the Empire’s goals.
This is the story youve been taught all your life so that you believe the lie. And its just close enough to the truth that it seems reasonable.
It plays off of our noble traits as humans.
the TRUTH is, “there’s no crime if theres no court”.
General Patton said “we defeated the wrong enemy”. And wrote letters to his wife explaining this. (Somehow the letters survived.)
BUT JUST A WEEK OR TWO LATER, General Patton mysteriously died in a car accident.
The one person with enough military power and influence to turn the tide of war AND turn the minds of Americans
Oh how convenient that he died. Only him, by the way.

IF THIS WAS REAL, SHE WOULD BE DEAD. THERE WOULD BE NO STAIN ON THE EMPIRE AND NO ONE WOULD KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT, SAVE FOR A VERY FEW PEOPLE.
Thats how reality works.

If you think a corrupt system works against its own corruption?

Does the empire not have any good tactical commanders? You know what happens when someone points out an atrocity due to tactical laziness? You fix that laziness, and not get to the point that they remove their artillery, that delayed the clean up, which most likely killed even more people!
And considering how they seem to treat the MC, who is basically holding down the fort, so they can wage war elsewhere? Are they stupid?
I guess the writer has no chops to write politics in the same vein as a tower defense gaming. The backstory has no substance:
(1) Guerilla fighters, literally do hide in with civilians and use them as body cover. The empire strat is a logical (and brutal) way of ending the war.
(2) Granny being suprised by this is dumb as hell, she’s already a war vet by then.
(3) The whole “making a stain” talk is just pure nonsense, I’d expected her to be dismissed or have her life threatened in someway in order to keep the massacre a secret. This didn’t happen at all, hell the empire admited this atrocity to their official history.

After everything… it all makes sense why they’re both ‘kleptomaniacs’.
It just hit me but I got full metal alchemist vibes from the uniforms. Jupiter backstory was 10/10
So the Government did shut her up and remove her authorities after she expose them.
