Believe it or not, not everyone in the world is a serial killer, so seeing neither the MC, or his female friend bat an eyelash at instantaneous death and dismemberment of everybody around them hurts. This is just a painfully common trope. Edgy MC’s that couldn’t give a damn about human life is a dead horse, and it has been beaten into a pulp. Stop beating the dead horse is my point! People can have emotions in stories, you don’t have to be afraid to write a main character that feels sad or scared from time to time.
