For non physics people there was an Austrian guy, who in the early 20th century, invented the concept of a superposition, an occurrence when a particle was in 2 states or positions at once. He explained this by proposing a thought experiment. Inside a box, he put his cat, an atom, poison gas, and a Geiger counter. If the atom decayed, the Geiger counter would detect it, and the poison gas would be released, killing the cat. However, according to quantum physics, the atom could by decayed while also being not decayed, meaning there would be poison gas and no poison gas, meaning the cat was both dead and alive at the same time and no definite answer could be reached until the box was opened and an external observer existed.
