Kid, there is something you should know. The British measuring system was developed by people that were mostly semi-literate. It works REALLY well in that era. The basic “one ounce of water weight one ounce” covers a LOT of territory. Likewise, “inch”, “foot”, and even “yard” are quite natural lengths to pre-literate people.
You get one meter by sending out a survey team to measure the distance from the equator to the North Pole, and calling that “10000 km”. Nothing natural or required about it.
