The general is partly to blame. He is responsible for the morale of his troops. A kid sent to the horrors of war so his parents could have him killed off out of convenience is pitiful beyond hope.
His family did not send him a single letter, nothing, whatever.
He hates the guy for not accepting the guilt, but frankly, no one could come out of what he went through completely sane.

It’s funny: that general probably could’ve prevented that split by, I dunno, assigning Deon to assist their medic or keeping him towards the rear, since he was a CHILD and all…but if anything, his apathy towards him may have helped cause the very condition he now hates Deon for. 
MC could probably send his knights to stay in the demon castle and they’d be accepted without a word
