Ok, this strategy is dumb, the last place you want to be is point blank, their entire strategy relies on point blank and all of their ships are most dangerous at that range, Liam alone would destroy hundreds of ships very quickly if you let him get in close.
Long range hit and run is the only option, fight like a coward, it will really annoy Liam when he is the one fighting fair.
