As far as I understand it, the ancient guy gave his life so the world would have an opportunity for regular humans to find their paths to stand on equal or similar powerful footing like the cultivators from ancient times. She wanted to revive her love by making this soul pill by farming all the souls from that city but she needed the MCs sould as well because he fused his soul with the guy from old times by absorbing this blue stone. The MC relived the memories of the ancient guy so he knows that what she is doing is not because of bad intentions but because of love. I guess through her defeat she lost her soul base (or whatever it’s called) and dies but he puts part of his spirit / soul power into this tree so they can live happily ever after in the after life.
But maybe I got it all wrong.
