I might be wrong but I always thought Priest and such carries mace and similar blunt weapons because they were out of three bludgeoning, slashing and piercing in DnD were the most useful against undeads particularly zombies and skeletons. In earlier versions there were either damage nerf or damage buffs against certain enemies with one of three types and undeads were not only getting less damage from slashing and piercing than normal (plain out half damage iirc) but they were also getting more damage from bludgeoning ones (about twice iirc)
