It took me a bit but I figured out why hw was freaked when he was forced to see Eileen as a girl.

just an observation, and hopefully preventing this propagating because i have seen it so often.
You don’t take the short end of the stick, you take the wrong end of the stick.
this is from when the Romans ruled, they had a toilet brush, a stick with a sea sponge on the end, to clean themselves off.
Thus you don’t want to take the wrong end. it’s come to mean a misunderstanding, or jumping to wrong conclusions.
i suspect this is blending with ‘getting the short straw’ which was a method to pick someone for a task nobody wants to do, or to take the blame for something. occasionally by chance it would be justified, but most of the time such a person was simply unfortunate.
