If his goal is to research a way to get back home he should’ve stayed at the castle where resources for research and just living in general are abundant leaving plenty of time to research. At the very least becoming a court mage or coming to some sort of deal with the king would be way better than being a homeless adventure, at the very least less cliché.
In the first place having come to another world concealing his identity as a mage should be on the bottom of his priority seeing as the actual and logical conclusion is that he’s going to need to reveal himself at some point as long as he doesn’t mooch off the king.
But where I was really going with that is he shouldn’t be letting his friends be going to fight demons with the shoddy magic of this world and teach them at least a little bit.

This MC is kinda dumb; he can stay at the castle since, like someone else already commented, he’ll have access to a lot of research material.
Although, I understand him not willing to let everyone else in his little secret, I’m guessing because he doesn’t want them to see how OP he is and then ask him to fight for them.
Ugh! Frustrating, because eventually, he’ll be discovered or will have to show his power.
