It occurs to me that it objectively is early for him to make that change. It feels like he’s really doing it to salve his conscience about owning a person (‘as long as she’s with me, I’ll treat her like a valued employee and girlfriend, and when I’m gone, she’ll be free and capable, so there’s nothing else to feel bad about now’). He’s known her for less than 2 weeks, and I also don’t get the impression that she’s a danger to him. But he is planning to buy more women, and he is planning to choose them on the basis of being cute and having skill potential, not character or loyalty. And now he’s setting a precedent of participating in the slave system without the built-in protections of the slave system.
In other words, he’s won the lottery twice, and now he’s making a plan to always win the lottery every time he plays. He ought to at least establish a reasonable period of getting to know a slave before he makes them more independent. If he worries about their safety, then he should continue to guard his own well-being instead of incentivizing them to think about getting free.
I do think he should be looking forward to freeing them, as someone from a world where slavery is understood to be evil. I would be shocked if anyone who had worked for him wanted to work for anyone else after being freed. It’s just, this could have been a great discussion about the practical problems of freeing slaves, like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson struggled with. Instead, MC has missed all the nuance and just jumped to ‘this makes me feel better, and what could go wrong?’
