It might be an unpopular opinion, but sacrificing one to save many is an option that should always be considered. If the hero does what the villain tells him to do, he’s only setting himself and many others at risk, while if he risks one for a high chance to end the dangerous villain here and there, he might end up causing the death of the hostage(s), but everyone else will be safe. And why would a villain be true to his words and let the hostage live? He’ll probably use the chance to kill the hero/escape/kill until he’s stopped
