You don’t get the character at all. He’s hiding his powers because he’s LAZY. If his powers are revealed, tons of responsibilities and tasks will be put onto his shoulders. He don’t want that.
This shouldn’t be a big deal: just go down half way, setup a door that leads back to the cabin/village, and then tell them you are doing a floor every week. He just has to go in once in a while. He’ll graduate long before he says he hits the lowest floor (whether he does it day one or never does). They don’t know it would take him a couple of hours to get to the bottom floor, the task is to work on exploring with the weapon as a goal. No one can blame him for working at it but not getting all the way there.
