What a profound ending. In any other piece of sports media it would feel terrible. The main character lost and dies to top it off, but you follow Joe’s motivations throughout the series and you realize… he died living exactly how he wanted. It was never about winning, but fighting with every last bit of himself until he finally did. A personal victory that mattered more than anything else. The story ends when he does. No epilogue or feel good closure, just the end. What an incredible Manga that has been sort of lost to time.
