The numerous scenes with the ex tells us something. If you combine that with that last panel, the message is clear: he has moved on. 
I think it’s a nice and poetic way to show how he has rebuilt himself by coming to terms with his past, and looking at the future.
You can also read this by finally setting things straight with his inner dialogue with the two monsters, accepting who he is.
it’s not often that you can see those things in these kinds of stories
