In defense of the innkeeper, her own sister correctly told her that the boy was an actual monster, and he smelled like a decaying corpse even when clean. Then things began to be killed by an actual monster, and she was trying to do the responsible thing. Up to then, she fed and clothed the boy, gave him useful work that made him less ostracized in the village, and let him live in the same house with her own child even though she was afraid.
In defense of her child, he’s a child. His cousin smelled worse than a diseased hobo, and he got teased about it all the time. Yes, he was mean to Kabane, but again, he’s a child. Children are naturally cruel, especially towards those who are very different. And he was struggling to deal with the sense of loss of his dream just when it seemed it might come true.
They could have been better, but they weren’t monsters, just flawed humans.
Seems interesting, but I’m dropping it because the innkeeper got off scot free. Kabane was abused for as long as he can remember, wasn’t able to attend school and then she hired a hitman to kill him. She deserves death by a thousand cuts.
