I may be coming at this comic after it’s all translated and released, but I appreciate this chapter for highlighting Komi’s character growth in a unique way. Same for most of the other recent chapters. I feel like people were paying too much attention to specific ‘plot threads’ and not acknowledging the subtle nuance of Komi and the varied, wacky characters at her school. To be perfectly honest, the ‘story’ is just as much about the prospective/acquired 100 friends as it is Komi herself. The story is unique because the majority of characters are off-the-wall eccentrics with punny names in Japanese, and they somehow all manage to get along because Komi and Tadano befriend them.
Take that last sports festival sequence: lots of new weird classmates got introduced, but it also demonstrated Komi’s character growth around competition, especially her ‘rivalry’ with Makeru at the end, respecting her desire to not be shown pity without it having to be vocalized, and Makeru responding in kind with the handshake after getting up.
I feel like there’s just so many that don’t really understand this work.
