How many times was he trampled by crowds or when he lost his parents and they asked police or others for help finding him he just…had to wait to be seen by mom? You begin to see why he’s still totally in his head about his new life.
He clearly cares for Kubo…but he has no idea what love is given his sparse human contact outside family and he has to be more afraid of losing Kubo (and with her, their friends) than anything, which means chances of him actually confessing those bursting feelings is somewhere as high as him appearing in their next class picture without being pasted in.
