I was taught that the canaries used in mines were very sensitive and would pass out from the gas, they would only die if neglected and not taken out. I don’t know if that is true or not though.
You are however wrong that odourless gas is odourless to animals. Every chemical has a scent. It’s only true for normal human perception that water has no smell, but animals and now machines can detect it, for example.
