I think militarily/politically, the decision to give in to the threat was a bad move. Even if what he said was true, all the beast men would have self-destructed (not likely to hurt the nobles/royals since most were dead anyway) and it would not have prevented them from having a high-value general and aide (Gilgos) as prisoners or their heads. Any losses would have one-sidedly affected the Royal faction, turning their strategy on its head. This would then follow more chaos on the Empire’s front lines would increase in chaos/lower moral as their general is removed, making mop up and pushing them back easier. Particularly if adventurer/Royals/Nobels/Rei push back the split lines. It would be a route.

The nobles made this harder than it needed to be. I care less about honor. They need to survive to gain the benefits that they wanted in the first place.
