The term NPC doesn’t really make sense in this context, unless by entering these scenarios you take on the role of someone already in the established plot.
To me the persona gates seem like something that wasn’t part of the vision for this story when it was started.

Ugh.. not this… this reminds me of “a returners magic should be special” where gates are stupid random RPG quests. Fun for one time… but after a while it just needlessly stalls the plot to fight NPCs.
