Long shot: but could he instead be a dragon slayer? Someone who slew a dragon ages ago and took their power? Like the reverse of what Callista went through

For someone establishing a magic academy it’s weird that he didn’t prepare any strong countermeasures against mages. It should be obvious that the people with magic powers wouldn’t be pleased with new competitors. Especially the ones staying in shadows.
