There are now Russian and American variants that outperform the AS VAL in 9x39mm. 9x39mm is a necked up 7.62x39mm AK47 round to a larger 9mm bullet. When done perfectly it’s a good round but it’s hard to perfect due to all the ancient equipment, ancient cartridge design to be made on that equipment in 1981. Perfecting it would be ruinously expensive with not enough gain so Russia has moved on.
The Russian replacement is far far superior and the rifle is much more durable but I forget what it’s called now. I believe it beats .300 AAC Blackout which is the suppressed darling of many gun bunnies and some spec forces.
