They’re controlled by the Corpse Emperor. His strength is a Pseudo-Great Emperor like Yang Yan and the Insect Emperor. Luckily, he’s not mentioned in the story of either he’s still alive or what (probably died already cuz he’s not in Star Boundary or anywhere else).
Like the Bone race, Corpse race can multiply their members when corpses are exposed to the Corpse Qi exuding Underworld Well Spring found deep within the ruins of the sect. They have a special body in which they can reconnect their severed parts that are cut out. Those Corpse races are actually the former Ancient Yang Sect’s members. After their sect got destroyed, a member survived this and quickly learned a technique to turn all the corpses into Corpse race no matter it’s the enemies or allies.
Their goal is to open that Underworld Well Spring to create more Corpse Generals and Corpse Kings. (which they will succeed, that’s why there’s a final battle between Yang Kai and Corpse race ending the Starry Sky arc.) They will create a kinda sect called the Corpse Spirit Religion.
Note: As to how the Insect Emperor is able to control those Corpse Spirit Race, it will be spoiled later.

Don’t you just need the side of the map that has an x on it? Usually you’d either have a cypher that requires the full map to find the coordinates. Or each one points to a location that then gives a clue/key to where the treasure is located. Otherwise, you could just compare the piece with an x with known maps and find the location that way.
