As I’ve recently learned, native Japanese are very sensitive to smells, especially BO and cologne. They are, on average, not good with being overly forward or direct, even more so when affection for a prospective partner is involved. There’s a lot of interesting group psychology and sociological history, mostly stemming from the post Edo periods of their history. Worth a deeper look if you’re interested.
