Holy fucking shit. I know that this is a slice of life story and it does a pretty good job of lulling us in the narrative, but every once in a while it fucks up a bit and reveals the horrifying nature of modern day China.

The reason hospitals won’t tell you the gender of your child in China is because of the disastrous One Child Policy the CCP implemented. Because in Chinese culture only the son can inherit and perpetuate the family name, having a daughter means the end of the family line, and failure of the duty to the ancestors.

So how did Chinese families who didn’t want daughters solve this problem? With abortions. Lots and lots of abortions. Which lead to the current policy in hospitals they are referring to today. Of course, not knowing the baby’s gender until birth was not a guarantee that it would live; infant murder was highly rampant during that time as well.

What makes this extra fucked up is the situation with twins, or in other cases, extra children. If the Chinese government found out a family is harbouring more than one child they would actually force that woman to have an abortion or even more horrifically, murder that child themselves.

Thankfully, the One Child Family was abolished recently once the consequences became too blatant to ignore: There are now way more men than women in China, and that breeds a whole new set of problems that would entitle another rant, but that’s for another time.
